Air Mover Calculator

How many air movers do you need? Enter your wet floor and wall square footage and this air mover calculator gives an IICRC S500 low, suggested, and high count.

Quick answer

Use one air mover per affected room, plus one per 50–70 sq ft of wet floor, plus one per 100–150 sq ft of wet wall and ceiling. A single 600 sq ft room with 400 sq ft of wet wall needs 13–17 air movers. Restoration Equipment Supply’s calculator below does the math instantly.

How It Works

About This Calculator

This air mover calculator follows the IICRC S500 worksheet: one air mover per affected room, plus one per 50–70 sq ft of wet floor and one per 100–150 sq ft of wet wall and ceiling. Air movers drive evaporation off surfaces so your dehumidifiers can pull that moisture out of the air.

Is this air mover calculator accurate?

It gives a solid planning estimate based on industry (Air) and IICRC S500 methods. For a job we always confirm the exact equipment with you by phone before delivery.

Can I rent or buy the equipment?

Both. Restoration Equipment Supply rents and sells the full drying and power fleet across NJ, NY, CT, PA, NC, SC and Florida, with same-day delivery for emergencies. Browse the full catalog →

How Many Air Movers Per Square Foot?

One air mover for every 50–70 square feet of wet floor, plus one per room and one per 100–150 square feet of wet wall and ceiling. That is the IICRC S500 initial-placement guideline, and it is exactly what the calculator above runs.

The air mover calculation, step by step

Count the rooms

Start with 1 air mover for each affected room or area.

Divide the wet floor

Wet floor sq ft ÷ 70 (low) and ÷ 50 (high).

Divide walls & ceiling

Wet wall and ceiling sq ft above 2 ft ÷ 150 (low) and ÷ 100 (high).

Add, round up, add insets

Round each total up. Add 1 for every inset or offset deeper than 18". Start at the midpoint.

Worked example

A 600 sq ft finished basement with 400 sq ft of wet drywall: low = 1 + 600 ÷ 70 (8.6) + 400 ÷ 150 (2.7) = 12.3 → 13. High = 1 + 600 ÷ 50 (12) + 400 ÷ 100 (4) = 17. Start with 15, then adjust from daily moisture readings. If the room has two closets, add 2 more.

Air movers need dehumidifiers

Air movers only push moisture off the surfaces into the air — a dehumidifier has to pull it out. Size that side with our dehumidifier sizing calculator, or run both at once in the full IICRC equipment calculator. Need the units? See air mover rental and LGR dehumidifier rental.

How many air movers do I need per square foot?

One air mover per 50–70 sq ft of wet floor, plus one per affected room. Walls and ceilings add one per 100–150 sq ft of wet area above 2 ft.

Is there an air mover calculation sheet I can use?

Yes — the four steps above are the IICRC S500 worksheet. Rooms + floor ÷ 70 + walls ÷ 150 gives the low count; rooms + floor ÷ 50 + walls ÷ 100 gives the high count. Add insets over 18 inches.

How many air movers for a 10x10 room?

A 10×10 room (100 sq ft of wet floor) with no wet walls needs about 3 air movers: 1 for the room plus 1–2 for the floor. Wet walls add more.

Can I use too many air movers?

Yes. Far more airflow than the dehumidifiers can handle raises humidity in the chamber and slows drying. Match air movers to dehumidification capacity and confirm with grain-depression readings.

Where can I rent air movers same day?

Restoration Equipment Supply rents air movers, LGR and desiccant dehumidifiers across NJ, NY, CT, PA, NC, SC and Florida with same-day delivery and 24/7 dispatch. Call (973) 685-4030 or request a quote.
